Hotmail – end of an era
The migration of Hotmail users to Outlook.com has been completed, with all 400 million active accounts transferred over. Hotmail was first launched in 1996, and was one of the first large scale consumer email platforms.
Whilst users’ email@example.com email addresses stay the same, the UI of Outlook.com now matches the new modern Microsoft ‘flat’ style across the Windows and Office Suite, plus Office Web Apps.
Along with this visual upgrade, in the back-end, users now have the ‘SMTP Send’ feature, so outgoing messages can look like they come from other accounts, as well as deeper integration with SkyDrive, Microsoft’s cloud storage service. Microsoft have also indicated that other features will be added in the near future.
Really big data
As might be imagined, this was no straightforward task – with 150 petabytes of data being transferred over in around 6 weeks. Microsoft have created a handy infographic below to visually display this vast amount of data.
