Microsoft Lync has enabled businesses to communicate effectively with instant messaging, voice and audio, along with conferencing interactively inside and outside of their organisation.
As a business investment, a Lync on-premises solution does not come cheap. A simple topology includes several servers, as well as costs for certificates, operating systems, along with time for ongoing management and future upgrades.
Comparatively Lync Online takes away a large cost and reliance on an internal Lync configuration along with providing a simple licensing structure. With Microsoft’s cloud strategy to release features to Office 365 before on-premises, it will also keep your organisation up to date with the latest offerings from Microsoft.
If you already have a Lync configuration in place, you may be concerned about the impact to end users when migrating to Lync Online; this need not be a worry. As part of a migration to Office 365, coexistence between Lync on-premises and Lync Online can be established in order to provide continued Lync communication between users throughout the migration before decommissioning your on-premises configuration.
With Microsoft’s announcement to re-brand Lync to Skype for Business in the first half of 2015, it is a great time to migrate to Lync Online and reap the benefits of forthcoming features in Office 365.
